Naprosyn (Naproxen)
What is Naprosyn used for?
Naprosyn (NAPROXEN) belongs to the group of on-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is effective in pain and swelling treatment. It is also prescribed when dental pain, headache, or menstrual pain. Naprosyn also proved its effectiveness in joins and muscular disorders, such as arthritis, tendinitis, bursitis, and gout treatment.

What should should be known before Naprosyn taking?
If you have any conditions listed below, inform your doctor or health care provider before using Naprosyn:
- asthma
- cigarette smoker
- drink alcohol
- heart disease or circulation problems such as heart failure or leg edema (fluid retention)
- high blood pressure
- kidney disease
- liver disease
- stomach bleeding or ulcers
- an unusual or allergic reaction to naproxen, aspirin, other NSAIDs, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
- pregnant or trying to get pregnant
- breast-feeding
How is Naprosyn taken?
Take the drug orally, drink a full glass of water. You’d better take it during the meal not to cause stomach disorders. You shouldn’t lie down right after you’ve taken the medicine. Take Naprosyn regularly for better result. Do not take more doses and more often that prescribed. If you are taking Naprosyn for a long term, the risk of heart disorders may increase.
Consult the pediatrician if you are going to treat the child with Naprosyn. You may need special monitoring.
In case of overdose, call for urgent medical help. Do not give this medicine to other people. It may be dangerous for them.
If you have forgotten to take your medicine in time, take it as soon as possible. If it’s time for you to take the next dose, skip the missed dose and take just the next one.
What does Naprosyn interact with?
- alcohol
- aspirin
- cidofovir
- diuretics
- lithium
- methotrexate
- other drugs for inflammation like ketorolac or prednisone
- pemetrexed
- probenecid
- warfarin
This list may be incomplete. If you are taking any medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs inform your doctor before taking Indocin. You should be cautious, if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs. It may lead to serious effects if you are taking Naprosyn.
What important information should be known about Naprosyn?
If you do not feel improvement of your condition inform your doctor. Do not take other pain medicines before consulting your doctor.
Naprosyn is not effective in treating heart disorders. Even it can lead to heart attack if taking it for a long time. If you have heart problems, don’t take Naprosyn. If you are taking aspirin for heart treatment, consult your doctor about the possibility of taking Naprosyn.
Naprosyn should not be used together with ibuprofen and naproxen, ’cause it may worsen the side effects. You may feel stomach disorders, nausea, or ulcers. Do not take medicines allowed without prescription with Naprosyn.
Taking Naprosyn may lead to serious effects, such as ulcers and stomach and intestines bleeding. Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol, cause it may interact with the medicine. Serious health conditions such as ulcers and bleeding may occur suddenly and lead to death.
Drowsiness and dizziness can occur. The medicine may affect your ability to drive or operate machines, or doing any mental job. If you are older one, be careful while standing or sitting up quickly.
Taking Naprosyn may lead to bleeding. If you are going to have surgery or dental care, do not take Naprosyn. Brush your teeth carefully.
What are Naprosyn side effects?
There is the list of side effects which you should inform your doctor about as soon as you feel any of them:
- black or bloody stools, blood in the urine or vomit
- blurred vision
- chest pain
- difficulty breathing or wheezing
- nausea or vomiting
- severe stomach pain
- skin rash, skin redness, blistering or peeling skin, hives, or itching
- slurred speech or weakness on one side of the body
- swelling of eyelids, throat, lips
- unexplained weight gain or swelling
- unusually weak or tired
- yellowing of eyes or skin
There are also side effects which do not require special monitoring, though may be disturbing:
- constipation
- headache
- heartburn
